Download email from Earthlink server using POP

POP, also know n as POP3, is an email protocol (a technology) used by an email client (program) to connect to the Earthlink server and download email. It works hand-in-hand with SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which is responsible for sending out email.

Most, if not all, popular email programs can use the Post Office Protocol. The email account has to be first set up or configured in the program; and for this you require the login information (username and password) and the Earthlink incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Which email program for downloading Earthlink email?

The choice of the email program depends on the operating system your computer is running. In case of Windows 7, the recommended software is Windows Live Mail. This free email client is meant to replace the older programs- the popular Outlook Express and Windows Mail Vista. However, it may not come pre-installed with the operating system. No fear! It’s easy to get Windows Live Mail and install it on your Windows 7 laptop – refer that link for details.

Once the email program is up and running, go through the steps to configure Earthlink email on Windows Live Mail. There are many advantages of using an email program – getting access to your messages even without an Internet connection is just one of them. You can also take a back up of Windows Live Mail email whenever you want!

Using an email program and webmail

After downloading Earthlink email, most people find that the messages are no longer available online. This is a minor issue and can be avoided by changing the account settings in Windows Live Mail to leave a copy of the email on the Earthlink server – read that post for details.
