The United States launched the Vanguard 1 satellite on 17th March 1958. It was the fourth artificial satellite launched after Sputnik 1, Sputnik 2 and Explorer 1. Communications were lost with it in 1964 but it still continues to orbit the Earth. Vanguard 1 was the first satellite to be powered by solar energy – it had 6 solar panels.
