Pulitzer Prize was awarded to Ernest Hemingway for The Old Man and the Sea on 4th May 1953. Later, when Hemingway received the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature, the book was cited by the Nobel Committee.

The story is based on the struggles of an old Cuban fisherman, Santiago, with a giant marlin in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Florida.
