American mathematician best known for popularising science especially the field of mathematics. He was one of the most significant figures in recreational mathematics with his puzzles being published in Scientific American. Gardner was also a prolific author writing more than 100 books. His book, The Annotated Alice, which was his take on Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books, sold more than 2 million copies.
