Italian physicist and chemist best known for being the inventor of the electrical battery. He was a pioneer of electricity and power and his work led to the development of the field of electrochemistry. Volta also discovered methane and invented the Voltaic pile. The SI unit of electric potential, the volt, is named in his honour.
