The much derided (?) Alexa web site rankings were put to some innovate use by NMAP.org. Favicons of almost 300,000 of the world’s most popular web sites were combined to create a huge collage. This size of the favicons in this poster sized image is determined by the Alexa rankings; thus, the most used web sites have the largest favicons.

If yours is amongst the top 300,000 most popular web site, use the search function to locate its favicon in the collection. We have a few sites in this collage and plan to take printouts of this collage to deck our office walls. The zoom in and out functionality is fun and kept me occupied for some time. And yes, the image of the Favicon Poster Project (as it’s called) can be downloaded via torrent via http://www.bamsoftware.com/computers/favicon/.
In July 2010 an updated version was released with the poster size decreased to 24×26 inches. It includes some popular web sites that were missing in the earlier versions.
