I was on a web site last night and it exposed my I.P. address and location. How could they know this information? Isn’t this a infringement of privacy?

I’m a travelling salesman from the old school who has recently been handled a laptop. I’m still trying to get a grip on new technology and have realized that it’s not easy for an old dog to learn new tricks. Anyway, my boss asked me to keep a note of the I.P. address each time I use the internet (which is from a hotel I stay in). How can I know my I.P. address?

FYI, you can also hide your IP address through online proxy services.
