10 December, 1868

The world’s first traffic lights were installed outside the Palace of Westminster in London on 10th December 1868. They were gas-lit red and green lights combined with semaphore arms which had been proposed by railway engineer J. P. Knight of Nottingham. The traffic signal was 22 feet high.

The world’s first electric traffic lights were installed at the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, on 5th August 1914.
