Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac died on 9 May, 1850

French chemist and physicist best known for discovering that water consists of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, his two laws of gases and for his research on water-alcohol mixtures which led to the degrees Gay-Lussac used to measure alcoholic beverages in several countries.
