IBM was founded as Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company on the 16th of June 1911 in Endicott, New York. The name was changed to IBM several years later in 1924.
The Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company was formed by a consolidation of three companies, one of which had been set up by Herman Hollerith who had invented and patented the punched card calculator.
