Frederick Sanger died on 19 November, 2013

British biochemist and one of the two scientists in the world to have won the Nobel Prize twice in the same category. Sanger’s research was focussed on structure and sequence of macromolecules – proteins and nucleic acids. His received the first Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1958 for the determination of the structure of protein insulin. In 1980, he shared half the prize with Walter Gilbert for their work in resolving the base sequences in nucleic acids.
