Joshua Slocum completed the first solo circumnavigation of the globe on 27th June 1898. Slocum was a Nova-Scotian and started the solo voyage on 24th April 1895 on his sail boat Spray. He returned to Newport, Rhode Island in 1898, after circumnavigating the world and travelling close to 74,000 kilometres.
Slocum detailed his travels in Sailing Alone Around the World which became an international best-seller.
