World’s first powered flight, with Orville Wright at the controls, was on 17th December 1903. The flight by the Wright brothers lasts 12 seconds and was made 4 miles south of Kitty Hawk in North Carolina.
The brothers had attempted their first flight of the Wright Flyer a few days back on 14th December 1903. A few years later, on 22nd May 1906, they received a patent (US 821,393) for their Flying Machine. The Wright brothers are universally credited for the world’s first flight, however, Karl Jatho, a German engineer, had flown his plane for 18 meters at a height of 1 meter 4 months back on 18th August 1903. His flight wasn’t controlled, though.
