Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen’s expedition reached the South Pole on 14th December 1911. This was not announced immediately but a few months later by the explorer – on 7th March 1912. Amundsen was also the leader of the air expedition to reach the North Pole. This means he was the first person to have reached both poles of the Earth.
