3 January, 1888

The Lick observatory telescope was used for the first time on 3rd January 1888. The refracting telescope was 91 cm in diameter and, at that time, the largest in the world. The observatory is situated on Mount Hamilton summit close to San Jose, California. Important discoveries have been made by the observatory – several moons of planet Jupiter (including Himalia and Amalthea) and extra-solar planets.
