9 September, 1892

Amalthea, the fifth moon of Jupiter, was discovered on 9th September 1892 by Edward Emerson Barnard. The gifted American astronomer is known for discovering the first comet by photographic means and several other celestial objects.

He is, however, best known for measuring the proper motion of the Barnard’s Star, a very-low-mass red dwarf in the constellation of Ophiuchus and, after Alpha Centauri, the second nearest star system to the Sun.

Amalthea was the first moon of Jupiter to be discovered after the discovery of the Galilean moons – Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa – by Galileo Galilei.
