17 June, 2008

Firefox web browser set a Guinness World Record on 17th June 2008 by achieving the “largest number of software downloads in 24 hours”. The counter started at 18:16 UTC and ended a day later. By that time, more than 8 million people had downloaded the web browser.

The web browser had been released on 23rd September 2002 by the Mozilla organisation, an informal community that had come together at Netscape. The Mozilla Foundation was officially founded on 15th July 2003. On their third anniversary, they declared 15 July as the World Firefox Day.

By the way, the above mentioned world record was broken by the next major upgrade, Firefox 4, but since no Guinness official was present, the record is not recognised.
