Element Meitnerium, with an atomic number of 109, was synthesised at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany, on 29th August 1982.
The element darmstadtium was also created at the same institute. It has an atomic number of 110 and is named after the city of Darmstadt.
