On 9th November 1994, the element darmstadtium was created at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. The element has an atomic number of 110 and is extremely radioactive. The element is named after the city of Darmstadt in Germany where it was synthesised for the first time.
The element Meitnerium had also been synthesised at the same institute on 29th August 1982.
