On the 9th of April 2009, subscribers faced a singular problem at the Hotmail service. The service displayed “You don’t have an inbox yet” and would not display email messages in the account. However, the contacts information was available to the users.

This erratic problem seems to have occurred because of an unscheduled maintenance or a change implemented to the system – maybe a hacker attack (he he) – who knows? The Hotmail problem was widespread affecting all those who logged in successfully.

The fallout, as you can guess, is a lot of annoyed and irritated users. The fingers are pointing to the Conflicker worm, but I doubt it. Anyway, this did force many scared subscribers to scan their computers with an anti-virus program, which is always a good idea though I believe the problem was at the Hotmail server and not on client computers.

This short maintenance issue seems to have been solved now. Remember, free services from any company will come with strings attached. Don’t wrongly assume that such problems will not happen with Hotmail or other email services. For instance, a couple of months back, the world’s favourite search engine Google, committed a blunder (according to some sources) – you can read more about it at Google’s mistake.
