On 21st December 1967, the world’s first heart transplant patient, Louis Washkansky, died 18 days after the surgery. The revolutionary operation was performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The heart of 25-year old Denise Darvall who had died in a car accident was transplanted into Louis Washkansky.
