Venera 7 was launched by the Soviet Union on 17th August 1970. The craft entered the Venusian atmosphere on 15 December 1970 and landed subsequently on the planet. It was the first spacecraft to transmit data from the surface of another planet. Verena means “Venus” in Russian.
