The Morris worm was released by creator Robert Tappan Morris on 2nd November 1988. Morris was a student of Cornell University and used the computer system at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to release his program which was intended to measures the size of the Internet. However, the worm exploited a hole in the UNIX sendmail program and caused an estimated $100,000 to $10 million worth of damage.
