The Arecibo Observatory opened on 1st November 1963. Its 305 meter radio telescope was the largest in the world at that time.

Several important discoveries have come out of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico including the correct determination of the rotation of planet Mercury, confirmation of existence of neutron stars, the discovery of the first millisecond pulsar and more.
