9 March, 1961

The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 9 craft on 9th March 1961. It carried a mannequin Ivan Ivanovich (Russian equivalent of “John Doe”). The purpose was to show the seriousness and dedication to human spaceflight by the Soviets.
