Sputnik 4 is launched by the Soviet Union on the second anniversary of Sputnik 3.
The satellite is known as Korabl-Sputnik 1 and was the first test flight of the Vostok programme. It was the first in the series of spacecrafts used to investigate manned space flight. It contained various scientific instruments, a TV system and a self-sustaining biological cabin with a dummy.
The descent module of Sputnik 4 reentered the Earth’s atmosphere on 1 September 1962 and a piece was found in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, US.
