6 June, 1971

The Soyuz 11 was launched on 6th June 1971. It had a three member crew – Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev.

Soyuz 11 was the only manned mission to board the Salyut 1, the world’s first space station. It’s predecessor, Soyuz 10, had been able to soft-dock but had been unable to enter.

The spacecraft arrived at Salyut 1 on the 7th of June and left on the 30th. Unfortunately, all the three cosmonauts were killed when the crew capsule depressurised during preparations of reentry. Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev have been the only humans to die in space.
