John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain observed the basic principles of the transistor on 17th November 1947. The junction transistor was announced by William Shockley on 4th July 1951. All three received the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention which paved the way for the electronics revolution of the 20th century.
