The Safety pin was patented (US patent #6,281) by Walter Hunt on 10th April 1849. He later sold it to W. R. Grace and Company for $400.
Walter Hunt had invented the safety pin to pay off a debt of $15 he owed a friend, which he did with the money he got from W. R. Grace and Company.
