The RMS Titanic wreckage was located on 1st September 1985 by a Franco-American expedition led by Robert Ballard. The wreckage consisted of the bow and the stern, which meant the Titanic had split, and was found about 3,700 meter below the surface. On 15th April 1912, the ship had sunk on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg killing close to 1,500 people.
