20 April, 1535

The rare sun dog phenomenon was observed in Stockholm on 20th April 1535. It was recorded in the famous painting Vädersolstavlan. Though the original painting was lost, an accurate copy by Jacob Heinrich Elbfas survives.

The sun dog phenomenon is when a pair of bright spots, usually in the form of halos, are visible on either side of the sun at a distance of approximately 22°. They are generally located at the same level of elevation as the sun. Sun dogs can be seen from any part of the world and are not dependent on seasons.
