The first version of PHP, Version 1.0, was released by Rasmus Lerdorf on 8th June 1995. He created PHP for his home page and called it Personal Home Page (or PHP Tools).

The usage of PHP grew organically and it is now the world’s most popular server-side scripting language powering some of the best known web-based software like the WordPress.

PHP’s name was later changed to a recursive acronym, PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans.
