Apple acquired NeXT Computer for $429 million on 7th February 1997. NeXT had been founded by Steve Jobs when he resigned from Apple. The company created high-end computers which were used primarily at academic institutions. In fact, the World Wide Web was created on a couple of NeXT computers which Sir Tim Berners-Lee had in his lab at CERN.
