The “Monkey Trial” began in Dayton, Tennessee on the 10th of July 1925. John Scopes, a young high school teacher, was accused of violating the Butler Act and teaching evolution (Darwin’s theory) to children.
John Scopes was found guilty and fined on 21st July 1925.
A strange coincidence occurred on this day, when, in 1997, researchers reported that analysis of DNA from a Neanderthal skeleton supported the “out of Africa theory“.
