On 23rd December 1954, the first successful kidney transplant was performed by J. Hartwell Harrison and Joseph Murray. The vital organ transplanted between identical twins Ronald (the donor) and Richard Herrick. Joseph Murray went on to receive the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
