Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was formally banned by the Roman Catholic Church from teaching his views that the Earth orbits the sun on 26th February 1616. Years later he was forced by the Holy Office in Rome to renounce his views that the Sun, instead of the Earth, is the center of the solar system.
In 1609, Galileo Galilei had demonstrated his telescope to the Venetian lawmakers.
