16 December, 1947

Inventors William Shockley, Walter Brattain and John Bardeen built the first practical point-contact transistor on 16th December 1947. The three went on to win the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics.

On 4th July 1951, Shockley announced the junction transistor.
