Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with the planet Jupiter on 16th July 1994. The impact lasted several days, till the 22 of the month, and was observed and studied in great detail by scientists.

The comet had been discovered on 24th March 1993 by David Levy and the husband and wife team of Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker.
