Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer known for his record breaking flights on hot-air balloon. He studied the Earth’s upper atmosphere (the stratosphere) and cosmic rays. Piccard also explored the ocean depths using his bathyscaphe. The character of Professor Cuthbert Calculus in The adventures of Tintin by Belgian cartoonist Hergé was based on Piccard.
