23 August, 1991

The World Wide Web (WWW), created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, opened to new users worldwide on 23rd August 1991. The WWW was a project undertaken by Sir Tim while he was working at CERN, a high-energy physics facility on the borders of Switzerland and France. He created the world’s first web browser and the first web server. The project was passed around academic circles for many months and then opened up to users worldwide.
