21 October, 1983

On 21st October 1983, the General Conference on Weights and Measures defined the length of the metre as the distance travelled by light in complete vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Almost a century before, the length of the metre was defined by the first General Conference on Weights and Measures as the distance between two lines measured on a bar of platinum and 10% iridium.
