The United States mail introduced zip codes on 1st July 1963. ZIP is an acronym and stands for Zone Improvement Plan. It helps postal mail to be delivered more efficiently and quickly.
The extended ZIP+4 code was introduced later in 1983 and increases the specificity of a location within a ZIP code.
