An international celebration commemorating the world’s first manned flight of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin aboard the Vostok 1 space craft. The event was created in 2000 by Loretta Hidalgo, George T. Whitesides and Trish Garner and has been celebrated since.
Incidentally, the launch of the first Space Shuttle by NASA falls on the exact date – 12th of April. The Space Shuttle launch was 20 years after Gagarin’s famous voyage.
Yuri’s Night is also called the “World Space Party”.
