The “Wow! signal” was received on 15th August 1977 by The Big Ear, a radio telescope operated by Ohio State University and, at that time, used for the SETI project. Discovered by astronomer Jerry R. Ehman, the signal lasted 72-seconds and came from the constellation Sagittarius. The name of the signal comes from “Wow!” circled by Ehman around the alphanumeric sequence, 6EQUJ65, on the printout.
