World’s oldest tree cut down

6 August, 1964

The world’s oldest tree, dubbed Prometheus, was cut down on 6th August 1964. The Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) was at least 4862 years old (probably more) though its age came to light only after its felling. Prometheus was cut down by Donald Rusk Currey, then a graduate student, and the United States Forest Service personnel for research purposes.
