NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft on 5th September 1977 to study the outer solar system. The craft continues to transmit data and is famous for taking The Pale Blue Dot photograph of planet Earth from a distance of 6 billion kilometres.
It was launched 16 days after its twin, Voyager 2.
