13 March, 1781

Sir William Herschel observed the planet Uranus on 13th March 1781. He, however, reported it as a comet. Later the heavenly body was classified as a planet by the astronomer.

Uranus had been observed by Hipparchos in 128 BC and recorded as a star.

In 1787, the British astronomer also discovered two moons of the planet, Titania and Oberon.
