Thomas Nast died on 7 December, 1902

German-born American cartoonist known for creation of the modern version of Santa Claus and the political symbol of the Republican Party (the elephant). He is, however, wrongly credited to have created Uncle Sam and Columbia though he popularised them through his work. Nast is widely regarded as the "Father of the American Cartoon".
