The Statue of Liberty was offered to the United States by France on 4th July 1886.

The statue is of the Roman goddess Libertas, who holds a torch in her right hand and a tablet in the left. The tablet has the date of the American Declaration of Independence (4th July 1776) inscribed on it. A broken chain signifying ‘freedom’ lies at her feet.

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper and was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. It was built by Gustave Eiffel, of the Eiffel Tower fame, and dedicated on 28th October 1886.
