On 4th October 1957, the Soviet Union launched the world’s first satellite, Sputnik 1, into an elliptical low Earth orbit. The “Space Race” was officially over and the U.S. had lost.
Now, in hind-sight, a wonderful consequence of the U.S. losing the space race was the creation of the Internet. After the launch of Sputnik 1, the U.S. Government set up Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). It was at this defence agency that the Internet was born.
